Phoenix without a doubt has been one of the longest running successful Melbourne bands, Phoenix longevity and colorful past makes the band what it is today. As we know of the mythological story of the Phoenix rising from the ashes and how it never dies , so to is the true evidence that this band also has the same life path and name sake destiny of this mythological creature.
Phoenix started in the summer of 1991 with Joe Patterson, Leylan Lamb, Greg Chatelier and Mark D’Rozario starting the group without knowing the journey of it’s success. A lot of hard work and changing faces over the time created a need for success.
Phoenix over many years went through phases of producing different styles of music to introducing classical guitars and jazz styles to it’s mix. In it’s third term Phoenix decided to change once again with creating an ensemble of a three piece brass section to it’s line up and adding a jazzed up soulful style of music in it’s repertoire, including songs like “Mustang Sally” and “Treat Her Right”.
Once again after a short period of soul music phoenix shifted gears again and introduced three new members to add a more hard rock punchy post modern feel to our music with songs such as : Billy Idols “White Wedding” and Neil Diamonds “Crunchy Granola Suite”. This gave Phoenix a little more versatility wit some old time but modern punchy classics. This lasted some time before the band found it’s niche’
With the new wave of country music coming across shores from America, Phoenix realized that their calling was Country Music. Phoenix then introduced Barry Collins and Lloyd Seaman and Gerry Hughes to the line up. This line up is where they felt the most comfortable.
